Stainless heat treated

Hi,

I have been heat treating some stainless steel, with great results. I would like to lacquer the piece to protect the vibrant colours but when I use ProtectaClear it seems to dull down the colours, especially the blues and purples. Can you recommend another finish?

Thanks,

Sam

Hi Sam,

This effect shouldn’t occur with ProtectaClear. It dries to create a fully crystal clear protective coating. Often dulling can be caused by surface contaminants, uneven application, or residual greases on the heat-tinted stainless steel prior to coating.

Our suggestion is to remove the current layer, deep clean the stainless steel surface, and reapply ProtectaClear.

Hope it helps :)

Would this product work well on brass door push plates in order to stop having to polish them with brasso polish each week?

Hiya! Absolutely this kit is perfect for your brass door push plates — it’ll bid weekly Brasso polishing farewell for good!

Once you apply the coating, it locks in that polished shine long-term and forms a tough protective barrier to stop your brass from tarnishing and rusting.

If the brass has built up heavy tarnish already, we’d recommend prepping the surface first with our HD Deep Clean Gel for a thorough deep clean. This gets the metal into prime condition, letting the coating adhere flawlessly and deliver the best lasting finish.

Hello!

I am using Protectaclear on mild steel and copper parts. The first time I used it I good a good result. Since then the finish has not come out right. Please see attached pictures below , these taken after about 18 hours drying.

I have attempted to coat these particular parts twice now, and both times I have had a similar result. I had to spend nearly a day removing the finish with Acetone after the first failed attempt and now on the second attempt I have the same poor result! All parts are cleaned carefully with acetone and allowed to fully dry before coating. Indoor environment at around 15C, and I am using brand new lint free cloths each time. Application by wiping on and pot well shaken before use. It goes on fine initially and looks to be self levelling OK as expected, but then seems t…

Hi Song,

Much better this time, no problems and happy with the finish! Thank you!

Can I ask what you recommend for cleaning the finished surface?

Thanks!

Alex

Hi There! ProtectaClear is perfectly suited to your situation, but we would recommend PC279 instead. This product is designed to withstand environmental and chemical corrosion in coastal areas. We recommend neutralising and preparing the stainless steel surface with Cr24 Stainless Steel Deep Cleaner before applying ProtectaClear or PC279. If your stainless steel surface has developed rust, you can use ERW-XL rust remover to remove it. For routine maintenance, please avoid abrasive pads or harsh chemicals to maintain the finish and coating integrity. Hope this helps :)
